What exactly is an UTM?

The term Unified threat management (UTM) has been coined by Charles Kolodgy of International Data Corporation (IDC) in 2004. The philosophy of a UTM is to defend your network from all threats caused via data transfer via the Internet. In the most basic form, Unified Threat Management (UTM) is a

firewall, VPN, IDP and anti-virus working together against any known threat or in the case of heuristics, unknown threats.
