Backup
Backup is a much more complex task than you initially think. The concept is simple: Copy everything somewhere else, but that does not answer the following issues:
- Is your backup process really working?
- How economical is your backup process, as your backup volumes will grow day by day?
- How easy is it to restore a specific file from a specific time?
- Do you meet Backup/Archiving regulations?
-
And many more...
Collax knows that one key area of backup is economy: Many companies soon realise that just doing full backups every day works out to be a lot of disk space, and therefore money, for something that is, almost, never used. This usually results in backups become fewer and further apart. This will keep going until one day some data is lost and you find out you can not retrieve it!
The solution is simple: Install and use a professional backup system. These systems understand the principle of economical backing up in terms of both backup strategy (methodology) and media to use (Drive or Tape).
Also Collax recommends a centralised solution: Users can not always be relied upon to backup their own systems. With a centralised solution you take control of your intellectual property.
Finally remember that backup is not just for files but in many cases applies to E-Mails too. This can be for regulation reasons and also for practical reasons. Many companies actually rely on their E-Mail systems as their “Knowledge Repository”. Often if you want a specific version of a document you frequently go back to the E-Mail you sent out when it was released to the company. If this is the case then backing up your E-Mails into an archive is important.
